Sponsoring Your Spouse, Partner, or Dependent Child for Canadian Immigration

Canada’s Family Sponsorship Program enables citizens and permanent residents to bring their spouse, partner, or dependent child to live with them permanently in Canada. This pathway strengthens family unity and ensures loved ones can build their future together in a safe, supportive environment.

What is Spousal Sponsorship in Canada?

Through the Spousal Sponsorship Program, Canadian citizens and permanent residents can apply for permanent residency on behalf of their spouse, common-law partner, conjugal partner, or dependent child. These applications are treated as a top priority by Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) because of the importance placed on keeping families together.

Eligibility Criteria for Sponsors

To qualify as a sponsor, you must:

Be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident
Be at least 18 years old
For permanent residents – be physically present in Canada at the time of application
For Canadian citizens abroad – provide proof of intent to return to Canada with your spouse or partner once the application is approved
Show financial ability to support your spouse, partner, or child without them requiring social assistance

Who You Can Sponsor

Spouse

Legally married under Canadian immigration law.

Common-law Partner

Lived together in a marriage-like relationship for at least one year.

Conjugal Partner

In a committed relationship for at least one year but unable to live together due to legal or immigration barriers.

Dependent Child

Under 22 years old, unmarried, and not in a common-law relationship
Over 22 but financially dependent due to a physical or mental condition

Types of Spousal Sponsorship Applications

Inland Sponsorship

If your spouse or partner is already in Canada, they can apply from within the country. They may also qualify for an open work permit while their application is being processed.

Outland Sponsorship

If your spouse, partner, or dependent child is outside Canada, the application is processed through the visa office in their country of residence before they move to Canada.

Processing Times

Spousal Sponsorship – Around 12 months on average
Dependent Child Sponsorship – 6–12 months, depending on country of residence

Financial Responsibilities of a Sponsor

When you sponsor a spouse, partner, or child, you agree to:

Provide basic needs such as food, clothing, and housing
Cover health and dental expenses not included in public insurance
Commit to financial support for:
3 years for a spouse or partner
10 years for a dependent child or until they turn 22 (whichever comes first)
